At the quotation stage of an export water supply project, the buyer puts three terms in one inquiry email: WRAS, NSF/ANSI 61, ACS — and asks for certificate numbers verifiable on official websites (a typical scenario based on our inquiry experience). If you cannot say which system each term belongs to and how to prove it, the deal stalls at the technical clarification stage.

Read this article and in about 5 minutes you will know: which certification system to demand for potable-water flanges and gaskets, and how to verify certificates — plus a document checklist you can write directly into the purchase contract.

The short answer first:

  • North America → NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 listing, with lead content checked per NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 (weighted average of wetted surfaces ≤0.25%)
  • UK → WRAS; EU by country → ACS for France, UBA KTW-BWGL for Germany (microbial growth tested per DVGW W 270)
  • Domestic China projects → GB/T 17219-2025 hygienic safety evaluation plus the wading-product hygiene license — no foreign certificate substitutes for it

Why a Separate Certification

For ordinary industrial piping, pressure class and material grade are enough for flanges and gaskets. Potable water is different — wetted materials are governed separately by health regulations. Four pieces of evidence:

  1. Lead content is a hard line. The 1986 amendment to the U.S. Safe Drinking Water Act defined “lead free” as no more than 8% lead, and the limit has tightened since; the current NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 requires a weighted average lead content of no more than 0.25% on wetted surfaces (source: NSF standards scope page). Flanges and fittings are not exempt.
  2. Certification covers only the wetted surface. For ductile iron pipe, NSF/ANSI 61 evaluation addresses only surfaces in contact with drinking water — external coatings are out of scope (source: NSF knowledge library). “The whole product is NSF certified” is a claim that does not hold up; what matters is which contact surface and which formulation passed.
  3. It is regulatory language, not a bonus. 49 U.S. states and 11 Canadian provinces or territories recognize NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 as the compliance basis for municipal drinking water products (source: NSF knowledge library). Without a listing, you do not even qualify to bid.
  4. China runs its own mandatory process. Wading products sold or used in China must undergo hygienic safety evaluation per GB/T 17219-2025 (Hygienic Safety Evaluation of Drinking Water Transmission and Distribution Equipment, Protective Materials and Water Treatment Materials) and obtain the hygiene license — an NSF certificate does not count in domestic acceptance.

No single system is accepted worldwide. Match by target market:

Reading the Temperature Ratings

The temperature rating on an NSF listing defines what duty the certificate covers. NSF’s own listing note defines exactly three:

C. HOT 82±2°C Cold water up to commercial hot

Higher temperature means greater extractant migration. A gasket listed only at CLD 23 on a 60°C hot-water line is not covered for that duty — the listing temperature must be at least as high as your actual water temperature.

Grade Is Not Compliance

“304 or 316L” does not answer the potable-water question. NSF/ANSI 61 certifies formulation-level products: one specific EPDM gasket compound from one specific plant, one specific internal coating, one specific sealing lubricant — each listed separately. The same 316L grade can give completely different extraction results across surface treatment and batches.

Gaskets carry additional material-level requirements: NSF offers dual certification of gasket and sealing products for push-fit fittings to ASSE 1061 plus ASTM F2854 — the former covers material mechanical performance, the latter evaluates elastomer aging in chloraminated water (source: NSF announcement and gasket supplier technical material). Chloramine is standard practice in municipal plants, and this item is frequently missed.

Procurement therefore works in two layers: for metal parts, check lead content (NSF/ANSI/CAN 372) plus wetted surfaces (NSF/ANSI 61); for elastomers and coatings, demand the formulation-level product listing — “material grade compliance” is not an acceptable answer.

How to Verify Certificates

Three official portals, two minutes each before ordering:

  • NSF: the Certified Products search at info.nsf.org, by manufacturer name, product name (e.g. flange), or certificate number. The listing states the size range, material, and temperature rating (CLD 23 / D. HOT / C. HOT) — anything that does not match your order specification is a scope mismatch
  • WRAS: the Approved Products directory at wrasapprovals.co.uk, likewise by manufacturer and product name
  • China license: the wading-product hygiene license registry on the provincial health commission website, searched by license number

Procurement Document Checklist

Verification cannot stop at “we asked.” Write these five items into the purchase contract and technical agreement:

  1. Formulation-level certification listing proof, stating certificate number, temperature rating, and size range (attach a screenshot of the listing page to the contract)
  2. A wetted materials declaration listing every water-contact component’s material and coating
  3. Elastomer batch traceability, with lot numbers tied to the listing certificate
  4. Material test certificates for metal parts (MTC, EN 10204 3.1)
  5. For China projects, one more: the GB/T 17219-2025 hygiene license number, re-checked on the health commission website at delivery

Three sentences: choose the certification system by target market — one NSF certificate does not travel the world; the listing’s temperature rating, size, and material must match your duty — CLD 23 does not cover 60°C hot water; a grade is a material, not a compliance — only formulation-level listing counts.
