EPDM strip works by “compression sealing”: the washer seals the hole through compression when the bolt is tightened; its weakness is over-tightening — torque limits M8 ≤15 / M10 ≤25 N·m, because crushing the washer leaks instead. Silicone sealant works by “coverage sealing”: paired with a stainless waterproof flange, the flange spreads the pressure and the adhesive adds a second barrier. Three layers, three failure modes — verify each against its own spec.
