The Short Answer: One Piece Pays for the Whole Setup
A one-piece prototype quote can land at several times the unit price of the same part at fifty pieces, and the machine is rarely the reason. On the default basis of the Yaxiio CNC quote calculator, one aluminium bracket falls from CNY 1632.84 per piece at a batch of one to CNY 449.98 at fifty, a factor of 3.6. The gap sits in charges paid once per order and spread across the batch.
In about six minutes you will know which lines belong to the prototype itself, which belong to the order, and where production begins — and you will have a 1/5/10/50 ladder you can reproduce in the CNC quote calculator.
The answer up front:
- One piece: the one-off block — setup, first-article inspection and order handling — is 73.9% of the order cost.
- Five to ten pieces: the block falls to 36.2% and 22.1%; the unit cost follows it down.
- Fifty pieces: the block is 5.4%, and material, machining and post-processing set the price.
The ladder is a worked example, not a market price. Basis: 6061 aluminium bracket 120 x 80 x 12 mm, blank 124 x 84 x 16 mm (0.450 kg), 2 h setup, no fixture, FAI at CNY 150, order handling CNY 400, IT8–9, no post-processing, multiplier 1.70, pre-tax and ex-works.
| Batch | Material per part | Setup (order) | First article (order) | Order handling (order) | Order total cost | Unit cost | Quoted unit price | One-off share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 11.90 | 160 | 150 | 400 | 960.49 | 960.49 | 1632.84 | 73.9% |
| 5 | 11.90 | 160 | 150 | 400 | 1962.47 | 392.49 | 667.24 | 36.2% |
| 10 | 11.90 | 160 | 150 | 400 | 3214.94 | 321.49 | 546.54 | 22.1% |
| 50 | 11.90 | 160 | 150 | 400 | 13234.72 | 264.69 | 449.98 | 5.4% |
The quoted unit price is the unit cost multiplied by 1.70, the calculator’s default end-customer multiplier; costs are pre-tax.
Why the One-Off Block Dominates a One-Piece Quote
Setup is programming, toolpath proving, tool setting and the first clamp. The calculator defaults to 2 h and allows 0.5–8 h; the bracket runs on a three-axis rate of CNY 80/h, so setup is CNY 160 for the order. That is 16.7% of the one-piece order total, and it stays fixed across the batch.
Order handling is the default CNY 400 for freight, paperwork and order tracking; it is the largest single line here. If a shop folds it into its hourly rate, that line disappears and the rate carries it instead.
The arithmetic that matters is the denominator. At one piece, CNY 710 of one-off charges sits on CNY 250.49 of variable cost. At fifty pieces, the same CNY 710 is divided by fifty. The one-off share falls from 73.9% to 5.4% without any line becoming cheaper. One hour of setup is worth CNY 80 at one piece and CNY 1.60 per piece at fifty. The same fixed-block arithmetic on a turned part, taken from one to five hundred pieces, is in cost per part by quantity.
First-Article Inspection Is an Order Line, Not a Unit Rate
The calculator defaults first-article inspection (FAI) to CNY 0, because not every buyer asks for it. When the purchase order does ask, it belongs in the quote as an order-level line, charged once per part number and spread across the batch — not as a per-piece rate.
A typical FAI package contains a dimensional report, a material certificate check, first-piece photographs and the inspection programme. In aerospace supply chains the report is commonly laid out to AS9102C-2023, which separates part-number, product and characteristic accountability into three forms.
The CNY 150 in the ladder is illustrative, not a market rate. At one piece it adds CNY 150 to the unit cost; at ten pieces CNY 15; at fifty CNY 3. A per-piece FAI line charges the report fifty times. Ask whether it applies to the prototype only or to the first production batch.
Dedicated Fixtures Usually Stay Out of a Prototype Quote
The calculator defaults the fixture line to CNY 0. A vice, soft jaws and a standard clamping set are part of setup, not a dedicated fixture. A dedicated fixture is quoted for thin walls, an odd second operation, a tolerance stack that depends on repeatable location, or a surface that cannot be marked.
At low volume the distinction matters. A fixture costing CNY 800 adds CNY 80 to the unit cost at ten pieces, or CNY 136 after the 1.70 multiplier. At five hundred pieces the same fixture adds CNY 1.60, or CNY 2.72 after the multiplier.
If a prototype quote includes a fixture, ask whether it is reusable on the production order, who owns it, and whether the price assumes it will be stored between runs. The repeat-order switch sets setup and fixture both to zero, which shows what a second order should cost.
The Minimum Charge: A Floor That Has Nothing to Do With Time
The default minimum charge is CNY 150 per order, and the order total is the larger of the calculated cost and that floor. It is not a unit rate or a small-batch penalty; it is the shop saying that opening a job, issuing paperwork and scheduling a machine has a cost below which the order does not pay for itself.
With the default CNY 400 order handling, the floor rarely binds on the bracket: the one-piece total is CNY 960.49. It binds when a shop quotes without an order-handling line. A one-piece order with CNY 100 of variable cost and no order fee is quoted at CNY 150, not CNY 100. Ask what the minimum covers before accepting it.
From Prototype to Production: Four Lines That Move
Production pricing is the same model with four inputs changed, based on project experience.
Programme reuse. A repeat order at ten pieces moves the quoted unit price from CNY 546.54 to CNY 519.34, a saving of CNY 27.20 per piece, because the CNY 160 setup goes to zero. At fifty pieces the saving is CNY 5.44.
Fixture amortisation. A CNY 800 fixture adds CNY 136 per piece at ten pieces and CNY 2.72 per piece at five hundred. How many pieces will pay for it?
Material purchasing. On this aluminium bracket, material is CNY 11.90 per part, or 4.5% of the CNY 264.69 unit cost at fifty pieces. On stainless steel or titanium the material line carries a larger share, so grade, stock size and the mill certificate matter earlier. The calculator prices the blank, not the finished part: 0.450 kg in, against a part that removes material on every face. How blank weight, loss and substitution become that line is set out in material cost.
Post-processing minimums. The anodising default is CNY 4/kg; on the 0.450 kg bracket that is CNY 1.80 per piece, below the CNY 50 per-piece minimum, so the line is charged at CNY 50. At ten pieces the order carries CNY 500 of anodising; at fifty it carries CNY 2500. A finisher who quotes a batch minimum can remove most of that line. Ask for the batch price before the per-piece minimum is accepted.
The wider structure behind these levers is set out in the CNC cost breakdown.
Rush Is a Quotation Multiplier, Not a Cost Line
The rush setting defaults to a multiplier of 2.0, adjustable from 1.0 to 3.0. It is applied to the quotation layer after the cost build-up, so it does not change material, setup, machining or inspection. On the bracket, a one-piece quote moves from CNY 1632.84 to CNY 3265.68; at fifty pieces from CNY 449.98 to CNY 899.96 per piece. The cost remains CNY 960.49 and CNY 13234.72.
That distinction matters in a negotiation. If the shop shortens lead time by scheduling overtime, the added cost belongs in the cost layer and should be shown as such. If the buyer is buying priority in a full schedule, the multiplier is a price for position, not a cost.
Run the 1 / 10 / 50 Ladder Before You Send the RFQ
The ladder is a five-minute exercise in the CNC quote calculator; the input groups are walked through in the calculator manual:
- Enter the part outline and blank form. The blank, not the finished part, is what the material line prices.
- Choose the material and machine route. When more than one route is ticked, the highest rate sets the pace.
- Enter the features and run the same part at 1, 10 and 50 pieces with every other input unchanged.
- Set setup hours, fixture cost, FAI and order handling as order-level lines.
- Read unit cost and one-off share, not only the quoted total. If precision is left unknown, the calculator returns a range rather than a single point.
A supplier’s quote can then be compared line by line, and the quantity at which the one-off share falls below 10% becomes the natural point to discuss production pricing. On the bracket that point lies between ten and fifty pieces (22.1% at ten, 5.4% at fifty); on a simpler part it arrives earlier, and with a fixture or a tight tolerance it arrives later. The tolerance multiplier behind that delay is covered in tolerance cost.
Prototype Cost FAQ
How much does a CNC prototype cost?
There is no single market price, because the answer depends on the one-off block and the part. On the calculator’s default basis, the bracket costs CNY 960.49 to make at one piece and quotes at CNY 1632.84 before tax. A simpler part can quote below that; a part with a fixture, a tight tolerance or a required FAI report can quote above it.
Why is a single prototype so expensive?
Because the order pays for setup, inspection and administration once, and one piece carries all of it. In the example, CNY 710 of one-off charges sits on a CNY 250.49 variable cost, so 73.9% of the one-piece order is not material or cutting time. At fifty pieces the same block is 5.4%.
When does prototyping become production?
There is no universal piece count. The practical signal is the one-off share: when setup, inspection and order handling fall below about 10% of the order, material, machining and finishing set the price. On the bracket that happens between ten and fifty pieces. The other signal is design stability: if the drawing is still changing, a larger batch multiplies the cost of the next change.
Is first-article inspection included in the prototype price?
Not by default. The calculator starts the FAI line at CNY 0, because the requirement comes from the purchase order or drawing, not the machining process. When required, enter it as an order-level line and spread it across the batch. A supplier who charges the same FAI amount per piece is charging the report once for every piece.
Does rush delivery change the cost?
Not in the cost layer. The rush setting is a quotation multiplier, default 2.0 and adjustable from 1.0 to 3.0, applied after the cost build-up. It changes the price for priority, not material, setup, machining or inspection.
What to Send With a Prototype RFQ
A prototype RFQ checklist moves faster when the one-off assumptions are visible. Send the drawing with the general tolerance class and surface finish, the material grade and stock form, the quantities you want priced (1, 5, 10 and 50 are enough), whether an FAI report is required, the finish specification, the delivery target, and whether a fixture will be reused on the production order. State whether the programme may be reused; that decides whether the second order carries a setup charge.
Three sentences to carry away. First, a prototype price is a fixed block divided by quantity, so the first number is not the production number. Second, setup, FAI and order handling should be quoted separately, or the comparison is not like for like. Third, the step to production is visible in the one-off share, not in a calendar date or a round number of pieces.
