Seismic Anchor Bolts for Post-Installed Bracing: Selection and Documents

How to choose post-installed anchors for seismic bracing: wedge versus chemical, the prohibited types, C1/C2 categories and the documents to ship.

What One Bracing Anchor Point Has to Carry

A brace for a pipe run, a cable tray or a duct is fixed to the slab at a small number of points, and each point rarely sees one clean force. A lateral brace takes the horizontal force generated by the mass of the run; a longitudinal brace takes it in the other direction; at the anchorage the two arrive together as tension where the brace pulls away from the concrete, shear where it pulls along the surface, and usually both at once. The direction reverses during an earthquake, so a point designed only for compression is not designed.

Three site conditions decide the anchor before the loads do: whether the concrete is cracked, since a slab edge or construction joint is the normal case rather than the exception; how much edge distance there is, which sets whether the anchor can develop the capacity printed in its data sheet; and whether the point can be inspected or replaced later.

Quantity comes off the support spacing on the drawings. Our market study puts a 20,000 m² single-storey plant at roughly 2,000–5,000 anchors and 3,000–6,000 threaded hanger rods, working from a lateral point every 12 m of main run and one to two anchors with two to four hanger rods at each point. Treat that as an estimate and no more — a sizing basis for MOQ and packing, never a substitute for the shop drawing. Weight and packing data for the same family sit in the anchor bolt weight chart.

Wedge or Chemical: The Decision Table

Post-installed bracing anchors split into two families: mechanical expansion anchors with a wedge, and chemical anchors bonded with a vinylester or epoxy resin. Neither wins generally; the position decides.

Situation at the point Wedge Chemical Why
Uncracked concrete, edge distance per the data sheet Preferred Works The expansion zone is intact; loadable immediately after torque
Cracked concrete, slab edge, construction joint Only if certified for it Preferred A crack interrupts the expansion zone; a bonded anchor develops force along its full embedded length
Hole close to rebar or an edge that cannot move Weak Preferred Capacity comes from bonded length, not from a single expansion point
Overhead soffit, congested position Preferred With care Setting is controlled by torque, not by resin cure and hole cleanliness
Cartridge past its shelf life, or site below the resin curing window Yes No Expired gel time cannot be re-dated — check the resin data sheet before specifying
Point that may be dismantled later Preferred No A bonded anchor is not removable without destroying the concrete around it

The pre-installed foundation bolt range on our own site — GB/T 799 anchor bolts — is a different family: cast in before the concrete is poured. Nothing in it answers a post-installed bracing point.

C1/C2 Categories and What They Rule Out

C1 and C2 are seismic performance categories for post-installed anchors, assigned through the European assessment route for construction products — C1 the basic category, C2 the more demanding one. The category is not a steel grade and not a customs code: it records the test basis behind the seismic resistance the anchor declares, which is why it is the first thing a design engineer looks for on the data sheet.

In the Almaty supply market the requirement is stated flatly: in the concrete tension zone, only wedge anchors certified to seismic category C1/C2, or vinylester/epoxy chemical anchors, may be used. The same requirement rules out three product types as a group:

  • plastic plugs — a plastic sleeve has nothing to develop force against;
  • drive anchors without an expanding flange — the setting cannot be verified;
  • concrete screws — no declared seismic category.

That list is the decisive half of this entry. The category is a manufacturing gate, not a customs one: we found no EAEU technical-regulation list naming anchor bolts as a mandatory-certification item, and C1/C2 comes from the seismic verification clause, not the tariff book. Kazakhstan does keep a separate document gate on building products — national technical regulation Order No. 435 requires construction materials placed on the market to carry a certificate or declaration of conformity — but passing that gate is not evidence of C1/C2.

Coating for Exposed Anchor Points

A dry indoor point is usually supplied with electroplated zinc and nobody argues. The argument starts at the exposed ones: rooftop plant, car-park soffits, wash-down areas, anything downstream of a leak.

There the specification should name the hot-dip galvanized class, not the word “galvanized”. A quotation that says “galvanized” may mean electroplated zinc — a different process, a different coating-thickness band, and not a substitute in a wet position.

The class is itself not one number. ISO 1461 and GB/T 13912 set the required coating thicknesses by class, and each class carries both a local minimum and a mean. What belongs on the order, and on the report that travels with the goods, is three things: the standard system (ISO 1461 / GB/T 13912), the coating class called up, and the measured thickness against that class. We do not restate the thickness tables here — read the values from the current edition of the standard your contract names, because a secondary source is exactly how a coating argument starts. One related caution: hot-dip galvanizing is normally applied to carbon-steel anchors in the ordinary property classes; where a point is specified in a high property class, agree the coating route with the manufacturer rather than assume it.

Embedment, Edge Distance and Spacing

The governing dimension is the effective embedment depth — the depth over which the anchor actually develops its capacity, which is not the depth you drilled before cleaning the hole. Edge distance and centre-to-centre spacing then decide whether that capacity is reachable on this slab.

Both are read from the anchor’s own technical data sheet at the concrete strength actually present on site. The practice that keeps a bracing schedule defensible is procedural:

  • take required edge distance and spacing from the data sheet at the site concrete class, not from a generic table;
  • where the available edge distance is smaller, apply the manufacturer’s reduction factor for that condition — do not extrapolate past the end of the table;
  • in a tension zone, spacing reductions and the C1/C2 category compound, so a point that qualifies alone may not qualify as a group;
  • a drilled hole that strikes rebar means re-position, not a deeper hole.

The mixed-container models we studied for Almaty worked in M8–M16 wedge anchors and M8–M12 threaded rod — a useful sanity check on any schedule that arrives asking for one size across an entire plant.

Clauses and Coefficients to Cite

For Kazakhstan the quotable text is СП РК 2.03-30-2017, section 7.10, on design seismic loads on non-load-bearing elements of buildings.

Clause What it fixes Value or requirement
§7.10 (opening) Non-load-bearing and non-structural elements that could endanger people or affect the main structure or the operation of important equipment — together with their fixing elements Verification against seismic action required
§7.10.6 Horizontal seismic force on a non-load-bearing element Fa = Sa · Wa · γa · qa
§7.10.7 Design seismic response of the element Sa = 1.5 · ap · ag (ag = design acceleration for the building)
§7.10.9 Behaviour factor where failure endangers people γa ≥ 1.5 (otherwise 1.0)
Table 7.10, row for fixing parts and elements of machinery and equipment Coefficients applying to mechanical equipment and its fixings ap = 1.0, qa = 2.0

Quote the coefficients as they stand and do not paraphrase them. Do not extend the section either: §7.10 is written for non-load-bearing elements and their fixings, and it does not name pipe supports individually. The statement that survives a client’s review is “§7.10 requires seismic verification of mechanical equipment and its fixing elements” — not “every pipe support is named in the code”.

Documents That Travel With the Anchors

The document envelope is where an imported anchor separates from a commodity one, because the buyer cannot test what arrives. The set the Almaty wholesalers ask for by name:

  1. a Russian-language technical data sheet for the anchor as supplied — dimensions, material, declared capacity and the C1/C2 category evidenced;
  2. a batch material certificate traceable to the delivered lot, in our practice issued as an EN 10204 type 3.1 inspection document, where the traceability matters more than the type number — the difference between 3.1 and 3.2 is who signs it, and reading the certificate itself is a separate exercise;
  3. a verification page for §7.10 showing the anchor checked in the position it is used;
  4. a coating thickness report against the class called up on the order;
  5. a certificate or declaration of conformity where the product falls under Kazakhstan’s Order No. 435 lists.

Two commercial facts sit alongside the envelope. A certificate issued under EAEU technical regulations is valid across all five member states, and a declaration of conformity can run up to seven years — worth knowing before paying for a second certificate in a neighbouring market. Receiving is its own process: our fastener receiving inspection checklist covers what to check before the goods are signed for.

Three Markets, Three Different Gates

Market What forces the requirement What the buyer asks for first Local price reality
Kazakhstan Code gate. СП РК 2.03-30-2017 §7.10 verification, plus Building Code No. 253-VIII in force since 1 July 2026, which adds seismic assessment and technical passport duties C1/C2 category evidence and a Russian-language data sheet Commodity wedge anchor ≈ $0.34 (149 ₸ at 444.08 KZT/USD), threaded rod from ≈ $0.24 (105 ₸); a branded certified rod (Walraven WIS M10×130, 461.68 ₸) ≈ $1.04 — a three-to-four-times gap that being cheaper does not close
Uzbekistan Calendar gate. Resolution No. 727 of 17 November 2025 already approved the regional list of eight-degree zones; the list of building types that must use special seismic-protection measures is due on 1 October 2027 Nothing yet — the window is open No packaged system price published
Vietnam Design-file gate. TCVN 9386 is a national standard, not a technical regulation; it binds only where the project design documents cite it, and the 2025 parts have replaced the corresponding clauses of the 2012 edition A specification clause written into the design documents, not a certificate Seismic hazard is regional, not national

Two corrections to the way these markets are usually described. In Vietnam the hazard concentrates in the north-west — Điện Biên, Lai Châu and Sơn La carry the country’s main active fault systems — and Hanoi bedrock comes out at about 0.13g on a 500-year return period, 0.13–0.17g at Hà Đông once site conditions are included; design acceleration is therefore read from site coordinates and site class, never from a list of “safe provinces”. In Uzbekistan the 2027 date is a calendar item and not a fact: nothing is mandatory today, and a supplier who says otherwise will be found out at the first design review.

One further number, with nothing to do with engineering. Inside the EAEU tariff the same shipment changes duty with the code declared: fasteners under 7318 carry 8%, steel structures under 7308.90 carry 6%, building hardware under 8302.41 carries 10% and bracket-type fittings under 8302.50 carry 12%, with 12% VAT on the duty-paid value plus duty plus freight. The spread between a correct and a careless description of a bracket is four to six points, so it is worth agreeing the description with the importer before the invoice is issued. Distributors building a schedule across these markets can start from our distributor page.

What This Entry Does Not Cover

  • Anchor capacity calculations. Whether a given anchor holds a given load is a design calculation against the project’s acceleration, slab and geometry.
  • Resin data. Shelf life and curing windows vary by product and come from the resin manufacturer’s own data sheet.
  • Vietnam and Uzbekistan prices. We found retail small-part prices and no published packaged-system prices in either market.
  • Un-evidenced performance claims. An anchor not tested to a category is treated here as uncategorised, whatever its catalogue says.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a plastic plug or a concrete screw at a bracing point?

No. In the concrete tension zone the accepted products are wedge anchors certified to C1/C2 or vinylester/epoxy chemical anchors, and plastic plugs, drive anchors without an expanding flange and concrete screws are ruled out as a group.

Does an anchor need a C1/C2 certificate to clear customs?

No. C1/C2 is a technical-admission requirement that lands on the design side, and we found no EAEU list naming anchor bolts as a mandatory-certification item. Kazakhstan’s document gate on building products is a separate check under Order No. 435, and holding that is not evidence of a seismic category.

Which is cheaper, a wedge anchor or a chemical anchor?

Per piece, a commodity wedge anchor usually is, and a chemical anchor adds a resin cost that price lists tend to hide. The comparison only means anything per usable point: where edge distance is short or the concrete is cracked, a mechanical anchor must be derated and a bonded one need not be, so the cheaper piece can become the more expensive point.

Why does the order say “hot-dip galvanized class” instead of “galvanized”?

Because “galvanized” alone does not separate hot-dip from electroplated zinc, and the two are not interchangeable at an exposed point. Naming the standard system and the class puts coating thickness onto the order, so the coating report can be checked against it.

What makes the document envelope credible?

Traceability to the delivered lot. A material certificate that refers to comparable production rather than to the heat in your shipment does not close the question the buyer is asking, and a data sheet without the seismic category does not answer the design review.

Can you install the braces as well as supply them?

Remote technical support — drawings, the §7.10 verification page and document templates — travels with the goods. Site labour is not part of what we quote into these three markets.
