Slotted Spring Pin Size Chart — ISO 8752 / GB/T 879.1 Heavy Duty and ISO 13337 / GB/T 879.2 Light Duty

A slotted spring pin carries one longitudinal slot; pressed into the hole the slot closes and the pin holds by radial spring force. This page sets ISO 8752 / GB/T 879.1 heavy duty and ISO 13337 / GB/T 879.2 light duty side by side: d1 from 1–50 mm, 52 sizes and 70 cut-length steps lc (4–200 mm). The two parts have independent size axes, so wall thickness and shear load differ at the same d1.

lc is the nominal cut length; min and max are the lower and upper limits fixed by the standard. Above 200 mm nominal length the series steps by 20 mm.

Same nominal diameter, side by side

For the nominal diameters both parts cover, wall thickness s and minimum double shear load are shown step by step: heavy duty carries the thicker wall and the higher load, but its diameter series also runs wider.

Basis & Disclosed Assumptions

Where the numbers come from

  • Dimensions and shear loads are taken cell by cell from Table 1 and the sub-table below Table 1 of GB/T 879.1-2018 and GB/T 879.2-2018. This page and the family index share one constant, so every figure can be recalculated.
  • d1 max, d1 min and d2 are pre-insertion values: a spring pin is larger than its hole before it is pressed in and holds by elastic recovery, so the limit sizes sit above the nominal value.
  • The slotted parts give a single shear row that applies to steel and martensitic stainless steel only; their table note states that no double shear load is specified for austenitic stainless spring pins.
  • a is the slot width (max and min columns) and s is the wall thickness. Together they set the shear section of the pin body, which is why d1 alone is not enough to compare two pins.

Scope & limits

  • Nominal hole diameter equals d1 with tolerance zone H12 (ISO 286-2 / GB/T 1800.2). The standard requires that the slot must not close completely when the pin is fitted in the smallest permitted hole.
  • Length limits are banded: ±0.25 mm for lc ≤ 10 mm, ±0.5 mm for 12–50 mm and ±0.75 mm for 55–200 mm.
  • No shear load for austenitic stainless appears on this page: the standard does not specify it and it is not extrapolated here.
  • No weight data in this family: the slotted parts tabulate no mass and this site offers no weight calculator for them.

FAQ

At the same d1, how much stronger is heavy duty than light duty?

Take d1 = 50 mm, the largest nominal diameter both parts cover: heavy duty has a wall thickness s of 9.5 mm and a minimum double shear load of 1685 kN, while light duty has s = 5 mm and 1000 kN. The difference is the wall: the light-duty body is thinner, so it presses in with less force and exerts less radial force on the hole wall, which suits thin-walled parts and light locating duties.

Why is there only one shear row for slotted pins?

Because the table note of ISO 8752 / GB/T 879.1 and ISO 13337 / GB/T 879.2 gives a single row for steel and martensitic stainless steel and states that no double shear load is specified for austenitic stainless spring pins. An austenitic pin in these two parts therefore has no standard shear figure, and this site does not extrapolate one. For austenitic stainless shear data, use the b row of the coiled parts.

What hole size should I use?

Nominal diameter equals d1 with tolerance zone H12 (ISO 286-2 / GB/T 1800.2); the slotted parts have no exception. The standard adds one hard requirement: the slot must not close completely when the pin sits in the smallest permitted hole — if the hole is undersized the body is squeezed shut and the spring grip is lost.
