Screw Size Chart: Metric Machine Screw Head Dimensions M1.6–M10 (Pan, Countersunk, Slotted, Socket Head)
Head diameter dk, head height k and the drive size of metric machine screws M1.6 to M10 in five head types: slotted pan head (GB/T 67), cross recessed pan head (GB/T 818), cross recessed countersunk head 90° (GB/T 819.1), cross recessed cheese head (GB/T 822) and socket head cap (GB/T 70.1). Worked example M5 - same thread, three different heads: cross recessed pan head (GB/T 818) head diameter dk = 9.5 mm, head height k = 3.7 mm, recess No.2 (PH2); slotted pan head (GB/T 67) dk = 9.5 mm, k = 3 mm, slot width n = 1.2 mm; socket head cap (GB/T 70.1) dk = 8.5 mm, k = 5 mm, hexagon socket s = 4 mm. The number after M is the thread diameter d, not a head size: M5 is a 5 mm thread.
Head figures are the standard's nominal (= max) values. Head height depends on the head type, so an M5 screw is 3.7 mm high as a cross recessed pan head and 5.0 mm as a socket head cap. Tolerances, property classes and surface finish are agreed on order.

Pick a head type. dk is the head diameter and k the head height, both on the standard's nominal (= max) basis. "Recess No." is the cross recess size No.0 to No.4, which is the same as a PH0 to PH4 bit; a slotted head has a slot width n instead, and a socket head has a hexagon socket s.

The recess No. is the bit: No.0 to No.4 is a PH0 to PH4 bit. Recess numbering is per head type, so the same thread size can take a different recess number in two head types.
GB/T 822 covers M2.5 to M8, so the cheese head row is blank at M1.6, M2 and M10. Use the pan head or socket head column for those sizes.

Same M5 thread, five heads. Choose the head by the two numbers that decide the joint: dk for the clearance or counterbore diameter, k for the head height or the depth it has to sink.

Which dimension do you need? d, dk, k and the drive size
A machine screw carries four different numbers that all get called "the size". Buyers order by the first one and measure the others, which is where most wrong orders start.
d - nominal thread diameter
The number after M: M5 is d = 5 mm, a 5 mm thread. It is what the order is placed on, and it is not the head size.
P - pitch
Distance between two thread crests. M5 in the coarse series is 0.8 mm. Coarse pitch covers almost all machine screws; fine pitch is agreed on order against the drawing.
dk - head diameter
Outside diameter of the head, measured across it with a caliper. It sets the clearance hole and the counterbore: 9.5 mm for an M5 cross recessed pan head, 8.5 mm for an M5 cheese head, 9.3 mm for an M5 countersunk head.
k - head height
Height of the head above the bearing surface (on a countersunk head this is kc, the depth that has to be sunk). It sets counterbore depth and how far the head stands proud: 3.7 mm for an M5 pan head, 5 mm for an M5 socket head, 2.7 mm for an M5 countersunk head.
Drive size - recess No., slot width n or hexagon socket s
The recess that takes the tool: No.2 (PH2) at M5 in the cross recessed pan head series, slot width n = 1.2 mm at M5 in the slotted series, hexagon socket s = 4 mm at M5 for a socket head cap screw. Take the drive size from the head type, not from the thread size.
Metric to inch machine screw sizes (approximate, not interchangeable)
Cross-reference by nominal diameter only. The inch column is a straight millimetre-to-inch conversion of d; the last column is the inch machine screw whose nominal diameter is closest to it.

Do not substitute. Metric and inch machine screws both use a 60° thread form, but the diameters and thread counts differ, so a near-diameter inch screw starts and then jams and damages the thread. Use these rows to read which callout a drawing means, not to interchange parts.

FAQ
What does the M number mean on a machine screw?
It is the nominal thread diameter d in millimetres: M5 is a 5 mm thread, not a 5 mm head. The head is always wider than the thread - at M5, dk = 9.5 mm on a cross recessed pan head, 9.3 mm on a countersunk head and 8.5 mm on a socket head cap screw. Order by the M number plus the length, and confirm dk and k against the drawing or the counterbore.
How do I tell pan, countersunk, cheese and socket head machine screws apart?
By the head profile and the recess. Pan head: flat bearing face with a domed top, and wider than a cheese head at the same size (M5: dk = 9.5 mm against 8.5 mm) - for a head that sits on the surface. Countersunk head: a 90° cone with no bearing face - for a head that must finish flush, where a seat can be machined (M5: dk = 9.3 mm, kc = 2.7 mm). Cheese head: a plain cylinder with a flat top (M5: dk = 8.5 mm, k = 3.3 mm). Socket head cap: a cylinder driven from inside with a hex key (M5: dk = 8.5 mm, k = 5 mm, hexagon socket s = 4 mm) - for a recessed head or high tightening torque at a low head height.
Slotted pan head (GB/T 67) or cross recessed pan head (GB/T 818)?
They share the same head diameter dk - at M5 both are 9.5 mm - but the head height and the drive differ. GB/T 67 is k = 3 mm at M5 with a slot width n = 1.2 mm for a flat blade; GB/T 818 is k = 3.7 mm at M5 with a No.2 recess for a PH2 bit. The cross recess carries more torque without the bit slipping out of the slot, which is why it dominates machine screws; the slotted form still appears on older drawings and on some consumer-facing items, and the two are not interchangeable in height even though the head diameters match.
Which bit or key does each screw size take?
Cross recessed pan head (GB/T 818): No.0 (PH0) at M1.6 and M2, No.1 (PH1) at M2.5 and M3, No.2 (PH2) at M4 and M5, No.3 (PH3) at M6, No.4 (PH4) at M8 and M10. Recess numbering is per head type, so it cannot be carried across: in the cheese head series (GB/T 822) M2.5 is No.1 and M3, M4 and M5 are all No.2. Slotted (GB/T 67): the slot width n runs from 0.4 mm at M1.6 to 2.5 mm at M10 (1.2 mm at M5). Socket head cap (GB/T 70.1): the hexagon socket s runs from 1.5 mm at M1.6 to 8 mm at M10 (4 mm at M5).
What does "nominal = max" mean in these tables?
The standard gives each head dimension as a nominal value that equals the top of the tolerance band, plus a separate minimum. These tables print the nominal (= max) figure, so a delivered screw measures at it or just under - an M5 cross recessed pan head is dk 9.5 mm and k 3.7 mm on that basis. Countersunk heads carry a third figure, the theoretical maximum that includes the whole 90° cone, which is the one to use when the seat is machined rather than the nominal.
Can I use an inch machine screw instead of a metric one?
Not as a substitute. Both series are 60° threads, but the diameters and thread counts differ, and the closest inch size is still a few tenths of a millimetre away - M5 is d = 5 mm with a 0.8 mm pitch, while the nearest inch machine screw, No.10 UNC, is 4.826 mm with a 1.058 mm pitch. A near-diameter screw starts and then jams and damages the thread. Use the metric to inch table on this page to read which callout a drawing means, and order the thread the joint is made for.
